About River's Edge Sugar House
We began our Maple Syrup business in 1993 with 20 taps and buckets as an experiment – just to see if we could do it. That year we fabricated our own "evaporator" from industrial salvage and burned more fingers than wood learning the process.
But our friends and neighbors wanted to buy some of that first year’s production… all two gallons worth.
In 1997 we built our sugarhouse permitting us to process the sap inside, away from the February chill. We also bought our first “professional” evaporator and worked 800 taps.
We tripled the size of our sugarhouse in 1999 and replaced the evaporator with a larger unit, capable of handling the sap produced by our 2300 taps and then some. We added a full kitchen and storefront.
A reverse osmosis (R.O.) machine and field vacuum systems were added so as to collect and process sap more efficiently.
In 2000, we began beekeeping with 2 hives so as to produce our own Connecticut local honey. We have worked with between 13 and 40 hives.
We proudly offer our Connecticut maple products and local honey year-round at our sugarhouse located along the picturesque Mount Hope River in Ashford, Connecticut.
